A 53-year-old patient visited his general surgeon for evaluation of left leg pain. The surgeon recommended arterial bypass surgery to treat peripheral artery disease. This surgery involves placement of a bypass graft to re-route blood flow around blockage in the artery that supplies blood to the foot. A bacterial infection developed in the wound. His groin began to leak out pus. The surgeon never checked the wound properly for infection. The patient's left foot swelled and turned purple. Weeks later, his wife drove him to Baptist Hospital in Nashville. The graft became infected. The Baptist doctors found clots of pus that blocked blood flow to his foot. As a result, the Baptist doctors were forced to amputate the patient's leg above the knee. The patient lost his job, where he had been making $40,000 per year as a supervisor. After an 8-day trial, a Madison County jury awarded the patient $1,500,000. There was no appeal. Derrick v. Dr. Thomas & Madison Clinic Corp.
