A 40-year-old patient visited her family practitioner with the worst headache in her life. The family practitioner concluded that the patient was suffering from migraines. She was prescribed pain medication and sent home to follow up later. Days later, the patient was seen by another family practitioner who was covering for her primary care physician. The second family practitioner also diagnosed migraines and sent her home. The patient got much sicker. She could not move her legs. A neurologist ordered an urgent CT scan that showed an aneurysm where blood was leaking into her spine. Despite emergency neurosurgery, the patient sustained permanent paralysis from her breasts to her toes. After a 7-day trial, the Sumner County jury awarded the patient $3,500,000.
